Satellite Videoconference, “Youth Court: A Legal Guide for Getting Involved” –
November 19, 2003

Justice Television Network aired a live satellite and Internet videoconference titled “Youth Court: A Legal Guide for Getting Involved” on November 19, 2003 . The Internet broadcast was recorded and will be available for viewing until December 19th at http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/eousa/ole/jtnhandouts.html.  To order a VHS copy of the broadcast, contact the National Youth Court Center.

Workshops and Conferences

The NYCC Director, Tracy Godwin Mullins, will be a panelist for a workshop on “Teen/Peer Courts - Rural, Urban, and National Perspectives” at the Celebrating California’s Juvenile Court Centennial Conference, December 4-6, 2003.  Other panelists for this workshop will be Hon. Judge Richard Couzens, Presiding Judge of the Juvenile Court, Superior Court of California, County of Placer ; Paula Bruce, Donald P. McCullum Youth Court, County of Alameda (CA); and Karen Green, Peer Court Coordinator, Superior Court of California, County of Placer.

3D Prevention Month
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is sponsoring the You Drink & You Drive.You Lose. National Crackdown. This Crackdown is NHTSA’s National Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month (December 19, 2003-January 4, 2004). The purpose of the 3D month is to deter impaired driving during one of the most heavily traveled holiday periods (Christmas) and New Year's Eve. 

Toolkit materials are available via the NHTSA website: www.stopimpaireddriving.org  to assist prosecutors, law enforcement agencies and traffic safety advocates with planning HVE mobilizations such as saturation patrols. The toolkits can be easily customized and include:

Educational Awareness Campaigns
The Youth Outreach for Victim Assistance (YOVA), a joint project of the
National Center for Victims of Crime and the National Crime Prevention Council, supported by the Office for Victims of Crime, U.S. Department of Justice, is seeking 20 school- or community-based groups of youth leaders to design and implement youth-led educational awareness campaigns. Successful campaigns will educate adolescents about the impact and dynamics of victimization and provide them with information on where they can turn for help and support. 12-Month Campaign 2003               

December’s focus is on  health.  Click here for suggestions on activities and community service projects your program can conduct during the campaign in  December.  If your program presents an educational workshop or community service project related to health in the month of December, be sure to send in a participation form to the NYCC to let us know what you did and to quality for a certificate of merit from the NYCC and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

REMINDER: To be eligible to receive a Certificate of Merit from the NYCC and OJJDP, all participation forms for projects done throughout calendar year 2003 are due by January 12, 2004.

Recognizing the vital role that teachers play in law -related education, the American Lawyers Auxiliary continues to sponsor its Law-Related Education Teacher of the Year Award.

National Peace Essay Contest
The United States Institute of Peace is accepting submissions for its 2003-2004 National Peace Essay contest. The contest is open to all students in grades 9-12.

Kudos                

Brandon Burns, a member of the Syracuse City School District Student Court, was elected New York State President of the Distributive Education Club of America (DECA) for the 2003-2004 school year.  The DECA is a national association of marketing education students.  

Kathryn Crocker and Jeffrey Paterson, former volunteers with the Niagara Falls Youth Court in Niagara Falls, New York were among the first youth to receive the prestigious President’s Student Service Award in recognition of their outstanding service in the Niagara Falls community. 

A former member of the Anchorage Youth Court, Bryan Talbot-Clark, has initiated the establishment of the Alaska Youth Court Alumni Association.  Working in partnership with the United Youth Courts of Alaska, the purpose of the Alaska Youth Court Alumni Association is to increase communication between former members of Alaska youth courts and to assist with advocacy efforts.  Currently, Bryan is compiling a list of former youth court members interested in joining the Alaska Youth Court Alumni Association.  If you or someone you know is a former member of any of Alaska ’s youth courts and would like to join the association, please contact Bryan Talbot-Clark at clark_bryan@msn.com for more information.

Increase support for your youth court on a local level by keeping your local stakeholders informed of what is going on nationally in the youth court field.  

Print a copy of this issue and distribute it to your advisory committee members, board of directors, and youth volunteers.
