Funding & Grant Writing Audio
Teleconference
On February 24, 2004, the National Youth Court Center will broadcast an
audio teleconference with optional webcast titled “Effective
Strategies for Searching for Youth Court Funding and Writing Grants.”
Registration deadline is February 20th. Only 100
telephone lines are available, so participants are encouraged to
register early. Participants will be selected on a first-come,
first-serve basis.
Youth Court Satellite Videoconference
You can now view the “Youth
Courts: A Legal Guide for Getting Involved” satellite
videoconference, produced by Justice Television Network on November 19,
2003 on the NYCC website.
At-Risk Youth National Forum
On February 22-24, 2004, the National Dropout Prevention Center will
conduct the 16th Annual At-Risk Youth National Forum in Myrtle Beach,
South Carolina. The Director of the National Youth Court Center will be
presenting a pre-conference session and a conference workshop on
addressing truancy issues in youth courts. Contact Linda Shirley with
the National Dropout Prevention Center at 864-656-2675 for more
information on this conference.
KY Teen Court Conference
On March 5, 2004, the Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts will
conduct the 7th Annual Kentucky Teen Court Conference in Louisville,
Kentucky. The conference will be held at the Executive Inn of
Louisville. This year's focus is on the Role of the Court. For more
information contact Robin Winkfield or Karen Blackwell at
1-800-928-2350. The Director of the National Youth Court Center will be
presenting a workshhop on youth courts from a national perspective.
NHTSA Lifesavers Conference
NHTSA Lifesavers Conference on Highway Safety Priorities will be in San Diego, California
on March 28-30, 2004. Go to

National Youth Court Center will have an exhibit booth at this
conference, as well as participate in a workshop on “Innovative
Court Strategies for DWI.”

Mini-grant awards for NYSD
The National Youth Court Center is giving out mini-grants for active
youth court programs
that organize a project for National Youth Service Day on April 16-18,
2004. 100 mini-grant awards are available for programs that meet the
eligibility requirements and submit a completed application. For more
details on how funds can be used, how recipients will be selected, and
how to apply, please go to

CRFC Mini-grant awards
for NYSD
In support of National Youth Service Day, April 16th-18th, the
Constitutional Rights Foundation (CRF) and the Constitutional Rights
Foundation Chicago (CRFC) will sponsor a youth-led National Teach-in for
100 high school classes using lessons devoted to security, liberty,
justice, and equality. CRF and CRFC are partners of the Office of
Juvenile Justice and Prevention's (OJJDP) "Youth for Justice Program".
With funding from the OJJDP, the first 100 registered classes receive a
$250 mini-grant to undertake this service activity. The registration

Learn and Serve America Funds
Learn and Serve America has made available approximately $3.2 million
for school-based service-learning programs. Awards will be made through
a national competition to organizations addressing homeland security
concerns through active participation of students (age 5-17) engaged in
service-learning activities in their schools and communities.

New Statewide Youth Court Association
South Dakota has received 501c(3) status for a newly formed South Dakota
Teen Court Association. They are still in the early stages of
development, but began holding initial board meetings in late January.

Law Day
The American Bar Association wants to hear about what you are planning
to do for
Law Day (May 1, 2004). If you provide them the information,
they will give it national exposure through their website. Email
Charlie White
charliewhite@staff.abanet.org and let him know the name of your
program, where it is located, who you hope to reach with your Law Day
project, when it will happen, and what you plan to do. Also, provide
him with information for a contact person including an email address.

Image of
Freedom National Student Photography Competition
Entries for this year’s Images of Freedom National Student Photography
Competition must be postmarked no later than February 23, 2004.
Students ages 12-18 who have not yet graduated from high school are
invited to submit their original photographic interpretations of this
year’s Law Day theme, “To Win Equality by Law: Brown v. Board at 50.”
