Training and Technical Assistance Opportunities               

Implementing and Enhancing Youth Court Programs

The National Youth Court Center will be conducting three regional/national training seminars.  Each seminar will consist of a new program track for jurisdictions interested in establishing youth court programs and an advanced program track for existing youth courts that want to enhance their knowledge and skills.  Registration brochures will be mailed to individuals in the NYCC database by mid-March.  You can also register online at www.youthcourt.net.  Seminars will be held in:

KY Teen Court Conference

On March 5, 2004, the Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts will conduct the 7th Annual Kentucky Teen Court Conference in Louisville, Kentucky.  The conference will be held at the Executive Inn of Louisville.  This year's focus is on the Role of the Court.  For more information contact Robin Winkfield or Karen Blackwell at 1-800-928-2350.  The Director of the National Youth Court Center will be presenting a session on how youth courts operate nationally during the conference.

NHTSA Lifesavers Conference

March 28-30, 2004: NHTSA Lifesavers Conference on Highway Safety Priorities, San Diego, California. Go to http://www.lifesaversconference.org for more information.  The National Youth Court Center will have an exhibit booth at this conference, in addition to participating in a workshop on “Innovative Court Strategies for DWI.”

Funding and Grant Writing Teleconference

On February 24, 2004, the National Youth Court Center broadcast an audio teleconference titled “Effective Strategies for Searching for Youth Court Funding and Writing Grants.”

12-Month Campaign 2003

In 2003, 65 youth court programs, representing 17 states participated in the National Youth Court Center’s 12-Month Campaign.  The following youth courts received Certificate of Merits from the National Youth Court Center and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

Blue Level (Participated in at least 9 projects):

  • Elkhart County Teen Court - Elkhart, IN

Red Level (Participated in at least 6 projects):

  • Brevard County Teen Court, Viera, FL

  • Los Angeles County 1st Grassroots Community Based Peer Youth/Teen Court  - Los Angeles, CA

White Level (Participated in at least 4 projects):

  • Pima County Teen Court  - Tucson, AZ

  • DeSoto Youth Court - Youth Court in the Schools Program - Olathe, KS

  • Gardner Youth Court - Youth Court in the Schools Program - Olathe, KS

  • Columbus County Teen Court - Whiteville, NC

  • Cass County Youth Court - Fargo, ND

  • Brookhaven Youth Court - Patchogue, NY

  • Mt. Pleasant Youth Court - Mt. Pleasant, SC

  • Huntington Youth Court - Huntington, NY

JJDPA Grants

Learn and Serve America Funds

Learn and Serve America has made available approximately $3.2 million for school-based service-learning programs.  Awards will be made through a national competition to organizations addressing homeland security concerns through active participation of students (age 5-17) engaged in service-learning activities in their schools and communities.  Applications are due March 9, 2004.  For more information and application instructions, please go to www.nationalservice.org/whatshot/notices.html.

NYCC Mini-grant awards for NYSD

The National Youth Court Center disbursed mini-grants to 59 youth court programs to assist them in organizing a project for National Youth Service Day on April 16-18, 2004.  A list of mini-grant recipients is located on the NYCC website at http://www.youthcourt.net/NYSD_minigrant_recipients_2004.htm.

Law Day

The American Bar Association wants to hear about what you are planning to do for Law Day (May 1, 2004).  If you provide them the information, they will give it national exposure through their website.  Email Charlie White charliewhite@staff.abanet.org and let him now the name of your program, where it is located, who you hope to reach with your Law Day project, when it will happen, and what you plan to do.  Also, provide him with information for a contact person including an email address.

Kohl's Kids Who Care Program

2004 National Safety Council's Youth Safety Awards Program

This award program is designed to encourage participation and cooperation among youth, youth-serving organizations and other groups that carry out significant programs and activities designed to make a contribution toward greater awareness for the prevention of accidents, and the advancement of safety and health. Increase support for your youth court on a local level by keeping your local stakeholders informed of what is going on nationally in the youth court field.  

Print a copy of this issue and distribute it to your advisory committee members, board of directors, and youth volunteers.
