The Illinois
Attorney General Office and the Illinois Youth Court Association is
hosting the third in a series of youth court training summits. The
summit, to be held Monday, January 23, 2006 at the Holiday
Inn-Gurnee targets Northern Illinois counties. The panel topics include:
an overview of how youth courts work, a presentation on the principles
of balanced and restorative justice, an explanation of state legislated
local funding mechanism available to all Illinois counties, and a
presentation from youth who participate in a youth court program.
The summit is open to existing youth court programs as well as
individuals interested in starting a new youth court program (juvenile
justice or school-based) within their community. Individuals from
Northern Illinois and the Chicago region are especially encouraged to

For more information, contact Billy Stover at billys@kycourts.net or Robin Winkfield at Robin.Winkfield@kycourts.net. “Building on Success: Providing Today Youth with Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow.” Conference January 9-13, 2006 On January 9-13, 2006 in Washington, D.C., the Federal Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention(OJJDP) will sponsor the national conference “ Building on Success: Providing Today’s Youth With Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow.” Topics of the preconference training sessions on January 9 are disproportionate minority contact, performance measurement systems, community planning, youth gangs, compliance with the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Act, and programs for girls. Law-Related Education Conference Focuses on Separation of Powers On January 26-28, 2006, in Phoenix, AZ, the American Bar Association (ABA) will hold the law-related education conference “Separation of Powers: Principles and Conflicts.” Hosted by the ABA’s Division for Public Education on a biennial basis, the National Law Related Education (LRE) Leadership Conference serves as the principal, national professional development meeting and networking conference for leaders in the LRE field.

J. Robert Flores will address a plenary session at the conference, which
will include a workshop focused on youth who are at risk for becoming
delinquent. The conference is designed for law-related education
coordinators, educators, and education administrators, curriculum
developers, and supervisors, lawyers, judges, juvenile justice and law
enforcement professionals, and others interested in teaching communities
about the law and citizenship. The early

http://www.abanet.org/publiced/conference/lre06.html Bullying Prevention & Youth Safety Webinars On December 9, at 2:30 pm ET, the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center (NYVPRC) will sponsor a webinar entitled “Bullying Prevention is Violence Prevention: Making It Work Locally.” This webinar was developed by the Health Resources and Services Administration as part of its “Stop Bullying Now” campaign. December 15, at 1pm ET, the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center will sponsor a webinar entitled “Keeping Kids Safe.” The webinar will focus on the primary causes of injuries and death among children and youth ages 10-24 and ways to prevent these occurrences. National Schools of Character is an annual awards program recognizing K-12 schools and districts demonstrating outstanding character education initiatives that often include service-learning. Schools and students must be engaged in character for a minimum of three years. Deadline for application is December 5, 2005. The purpose of this award is to recognize teachers who have made an outstanding contribution to law-related education. One teacher from each award category-elementary (grades 1-5), middle or junior high (grades 6-9), or high school (grades 10-12)—will receive a $1,000 cash award. (312)988-6387 or fax (312) 988-5494. 2006 National Youth for Justice National Teach-In The Third Annual National Teach-In encourages young people to teach one another about important questions of liberty, security, justice, and equality in America. The National Teach-In is open to groups of students in classrooms, in schools, clubs, after-school programs, and juvenile justice settings. YSA YOUTH VENTURE Funding (Open to US applicants only) Get up to $1,000 in start-up funds for sustainable National and Global Youth Service Day (N&GYSD) projects by becoming a YSA Youth Venturer. Youth Service America (YSA) and Youth Venture are teaming up again to make every day National & Global Youth Service Day. We are giving young people the opportunity to create sustainable projects for N&GYSD 2006, April 21-23! Twenty five awards of up to $1,000 in start-up funds are available to young people (ages 12-20) who want to create new, sustainable and civic-minded organizations, clubs or businesses (“Ventures”). These Ventures must be youth-led and designed to be a lasting asset to the community. YSA Youth Venturers are required to host an event on N&GYSD. DISNEY MINNIE GRANTS (Open to applicants from the US and from other countries) Youth Service America and Disney are offering the Disney Minnie Grants for youth across the globe. These grants of $500 are for youth (ages 5-14), or the teachers, schools and organizations that engage them to implement service projects on National and Global Youth Service Day, April 21-23, 2006. POSTMARK DEADLINE: January 13, 2006. 2006 Learn and Serve America Grant Competition The Corporation for National and Community Service announced its 2006 Learn and Serve grant competition to support high quality service-learning projects that engage students in community service projects linked to academic studies. Grant funds will be divided between school-based, community-based, higher education, and tribal and U.S. territory programs. Application deadlines for school-based applications are February 2, 2006, February 28 for higher education entities, and March 7 for school-based competitive, community-based, and tribal and territories.
