OJJDP Program Manager Scott B. Peterson Receives Lewis Hine Award

A special congratulations goes out to Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) Program Manager, Scott B. Peterson. On January 30, 2006, Peterson was honored as the recipient of the prestigious Lewis Hine Award for his outstanding service to youth.

In 1997, Peterson was instrumental in developing a national framework for youth courts, teen courts, peer courts, and school-based courts in Washington, D.C., which is being used across the country as well as Germany, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. Peterson’s goals are to improve the lives of troubled youth, to improve the handling of abuse and neglect cases in our criminal justice system, and to reduce the length of time children are forced to linger in the foster care system.

A panel of judges from corporations, nonprofits, and foundations selected award recipients from hundreds of nominations submitted by governors, mayors, CEOS, and nonprofit leaders from across the country.

Town Hall Meetings on Underage Drinking

The Federal  Interagency Coordinating Committee for the Prevention of Underage Drinking (ICCPUD) is supporting a series of town hall-style meetings to take place in communities across America on or around March 28, 2006 in order to help educate young people and caring adults about the risks associated with underage drinking.

These local Town Hall Meetings will give local communities the opportunity to come together to learn more about the new research on underage drinking and its impact on both individuals and the community, and to discuss how their community can best prevent underage alcohol use and alcohol-related driving. These Town Hall Meetings are designed to alert and empower the community to take more long term action as well as generate interest from the media.  Youth Court participants can play a vital role in these Town Hall Meetings, especially when addressing long-term community action with strategies that are known to be successful.

To find out how to get involved or help plan an event in your community, go to www.stopalcoholabuse.gov/townhall.

If you would like additional information or assistance, particularly in addressing the alcohol-related driving piece of underage drinking issues, please feel free to contact Cheryl Neverman at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at cheryl.neverman@nhtsa.dot.gov.
