Funding Opportunities National Youth Court Center’s NYSD Mini-Grant Application Deadline Extended
The
application deadline for the National Youth Court Center’s National
Youth Service Day mini-grants has been extended until
February 15, 2006.
Youth, teen, peer, or student courts that want to organize and
conduct a community service project during National Youth Service
Day are eligible to apply. Up to 80 $250 mini-grants will be
awarded. Program coordinators or administrators must submit the
application form. Awards will be allocated on a first come,
first-served basis to youth courts that submit a valid application.

Youth Invited to Create Hurricane Relief Projects Through Katrina's Kids Community Service Grants WASHINGTON- January 26, 2006 - In conjunction with National and Global Youth Service Day, April 21-23, 2006, Youth Service America, America's Promise, and Katrina's Kids are offering seventeen $1000 grants to young people (ages 5-25), to implement sustainable relief projects supporting the hurricane relief efforts in the Gulf Region. Projects will be launched on National and Global Youth Service Day, and must be youth created and led. Applications will be accepted through March 3, 2006. Application deadlines for school-based applications are February 2, 2006, February 28 for higher education entities, and March 7 for school-based competitive, community-based, and tribal and territories. Announcements In her opening remarks at the Federal Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention conference, “Building on Success: Providing Today’s Youth With Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow,” First Lady Laura Bush described some of the many challenges facing our nation’s youth. The first lady also emphasized the role of Helping America’s Youth Initiative in helping young people grow up strong and healthy. Peterson Receives Lewis Hine Award A special congratulations goes out to Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) Program Manager, Scott B. Peterson. On January 30, 2006, Peterson was honored as the recipient of the prestigious Lewis Hine Award for his outstanding service to youth. In 1997, Peterson was instrumental in developing a national framework for youth courts, teen courts, peer courts, and school-based courts in Washington, D.C., which is being used across the country as well as Germany, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. Peterson’s goals are to improve the lives of troubled youth, to improve the handling of abuse and neglect cases in our criminal justice system, and to reduce the length of time children are forced to linger in the foster care system.
A panel of judges from
corporations, nonprofits, and foundations selected award recipients from
hundreds of nominations submitted by governors, mayors, CEOS, and
nonprofit leaders from across the country. The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) has released “Indicators of School Crime and Safety, 2005.” A joint effort by BJS and the National Center for Education Statistics, this annual report examines crime occurring in school as well as on the way to and from school. It also provides current detailed statistical information on the nature of crime in schools, school environments, and responses to violence and crime at school. National Committee of State Youth Court Associations and Networking Groups Convenes Representatives from 18 state youth court associations and networking groups will convene in New Orleans, LA on February 6-8, 2006 to discuss plans to enhance, expand, and unite state associations and networking groups serving teen, student, peer, and youth courts. Town Hall Meetings on Underage Drinking The Federal Interagency Coordinating Committee for the Prevention of Underage Drinking (ICCPUD) is supporting a series of town hall-style meetings to take place in communities across America on or around March 28, 2006 in order to help educate young people and caring adults about the risks associated with underage drinking. These local Town Hall Meetings will give local communities the opportunity to come together to learn more about the new research on underage drinking and its impact on both individuals and the community, and to discuss how their community can best prevent underage alcohol use and alcohol-related driving. These Town Hall Meetings are designed to alert and empower the community to take more long term action as well as generate interest from the media. Youth Court participants can play a vital role in these Town Hall Meetings, especially when addressing long-term community action with strategies that are known to be successful. Scholarships and Awards Sponsored by Kohl’s Department Stores, Inc. the Kids Who Care Program is open to ages 6 through 18 who reside in Kohl’s Department Store communities and who have not graduated high school as of March 15, 2006. The program awards over $200,000 in scholarships annually to young people who volunteer in their communities. Consumers who nominate children for the Kohl’s Kids Who Care must be at least 21 years of age. Kohl’s Department Stores employees are ineligible.
