NYCC Announces Implementing & Enhancing Youth Courts Training Seminar

The National Youth Court Center will be hosting an Implementation & Enhancing Youth Courts Training Seminar in Albany, New York on September 13 -15, 2006. Space is limited so register early. Upcoming Conference Will Feature Juvenile Services

On October 15-18, 2006, in Las Vegas, NV, the National Partnership for Juvenile Services will hold its annual Joint Conference on Juvenile Services, “Representing America’s Youth.” Workshops will address the following topics:

  • Juvenile detention services

  • Juvenile corrections/ institutions

  • Education of youth in confinement

  • Mental health issues in juvenile justice

  • Healthcare issues in managing juvenile populations

FCCLA National Leadership Meeting July 9-13, 2006 Nashville, Tennessee

The Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America will be hosting their National Leadership Meeting, July 9-13 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. Boys Hope Girls Hope Proudly Presents the 2006 Opportunity Maker Award

The Opportunity Maker award celebrates those who share the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to reach his/her full potential. Candidates’ who provide opportunities by allowing children and youth to be safe, develop skills, pursue education, feel loved and grow into healthy and productive adults.  Nominations are being accepted through July 15, 2006.  For more information, please visit their website at www.opportunityknocking.org .

OJP Seeks Nominations for Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor

Each day, public safety officers risk their lives to protect our communities. To honor that commitment, Congress created the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor, the highest national award for valor by a public safety officer.

The U.S. Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs (OJP) is currently accepting nominations for this honor, awarded annually by the President to public safety officers cited by the Attorney General who have exhibited exceptional courage in protecting or saving human lives. The nomination deadline is July 31, 2006. The nomination period covers acts of valor from June 1, 2005, to May 31, 2006.

Bridgestone Firestone Safety Scholars Essay Contest

The Bridgestone Firestone Safety Scholars Essay Contest is available to students aged 16 to 21 who are enrolled full-time in a secondary, college level, or trade school. You must submit an essay no more than 500 words relating to automobile safety.

The essay should discuss effective ways to improve driver safety for drivers aged 16 to 21 and ideas on the best and most effective way to communicate to and educate drivers on the topic discussed. You must have a valid driver’s license to be eligible. Deadline is July 31, 2006. For more information, please visit www.safetyscholars.com.

2007 Disney Teacher Awards – Nominate an Innovative Teacher!

Each year Disney presents innovative teachers with the Disney Teacher Awards in celebration of their creativity, innovative teaching methods, and ability to inspire students while actively engaging them in learning. Each honoree receives $10,000 from The Walt Disney Company and a trip to Disneyland in Anaheim, California, for a week of festivities that includes an awards gala, professional development, and fun in the theme park. In addition, each honoree's school will receive $5,000 from Disney. Nominations will be accepted August 15-October 15, 2006. United States Senate Youth Program Award

The United States Senate Youth Program Award is available to high school juniors and seniors who are elected student officers including student body officers, class officers, student council representatives and student representatives to a district or state level civic or educational organization. The program includes an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. during March 3-10, 2007 and a $5,000 college scholarship. Deadline varies. For more information, visit http://www.ussenateyouth.org.

Attorney General Gonzales Announces Nearly $15 Million in Funding to Promote Gang Prevention

On June 6, the Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales announced nearly $15 million dollars in grant funds for school based law enforcement officer-instructed classroom curriculum through the Gang Resistance Education and Training Program (G.R.E.A.T.). 

The G.R.E.A.T. Program is administered by the Office of Justice Program’s (OJP’s), Bureau of Justice Assistance within the Justice Department and is geared toward middle and high school students to reduce their involvement in delinquent behavior, violence, and gang membership. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Announces Funding for Faith Based and Community Organizations Serving At- Risk Youth

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Administration for Children and Families is seeking grant applications for its Compassion Capital Fund Communities Empowering Youth (CEY) Program.Under the CEY program, funds will be awarded to build the organizational capacity of experienced lead Faith Based Community Organizations (FBCO’s) and their partnering FBCOs to better meet the needs of America's disadvantaged youth. The lead organization will assist its faith-based or community partners through technical assistance and training in four CEY critical areas: leadership development, organizational development, program development, and community engagement. Applicants must focus on improving organizational capacity and sustainability among FBCOs providing services in the following social service priority areas: gang activity, youth violence, and child abuse and neglect.

Start-Up Funds Available for National and Global Youth Service Day Projects

You could win up to $1,000 in start-up funds for sustainable National & Global Youth Service Day projects by joining the YSA Youth Venture program. Thirty awards of up to $1,000 in start-up funds will be available to young people ages 12 to 20 who want to create innovative, new, sustainable and civic-minded organizations, clubs or businesses ("ventures"). Applications must be received by 5:00pm EST on July 24, 2006. For more information or to download an application, please visit www.youthventure.org.  

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Announces Funding for Mental Health Service Providers

Approximately $100,000 per year for three years will be awarded to partnerships of schools and mental health service providers assisting children in low-income and refugee- and immigrant-dense communities. For more information, visit www.rwjf.org . Deadline is July 28, 2006.

2006 National and Global Youth Service Day a Success!!

The National Youth Court Center would like to acknowledge youth courts, teen courts, and peer courts for lending a helping hand to make a difference in their communities during National and Global Youth Service Day, which was held April 21-22.  For a detailed listing and photographs of the great projects youth courts did across the country log onto www.youthcourt.net.

National Youth Court Center’s Volunteer Hall of Honor Still Accepting Applicants

The National Youth Court Center is still accepting applicants for the Volunteer Hall of Honor on its website. Local youth courts may submit the names of one youth and one adult volunteer from their program who have been particularly valuable or who have made an outstanding contribution to the program throughout the past year. If you feel you have a youth and or adult volunteer who deserve special recognition, nominate them for the Volunteer Hall of Honor today. Hurry! Application deadline is August 1, 2006.  The nominees will be posted on the NYCC website. Certificates for those nominated for the Hall of Honor will be mailed out to program coordinators by August 15.

It is that time of year again—time to start planning your activities for National Youth Court Month. Courts across the country will be actively participating in community events to showcase their programs. CRF Quarterly Promotes Community Service Learning

The Constitutional Rights Foundation (CRF) has published the spring 2006 issue of its quarterly online newsletter, “Service-Learning Network.” The lead article describes community service learning, an innovative approach to juvenile justice that applies principles of school-based service learning, balanced and restorative justice, and law-related education to enhance traditional, court-ordered community service. California

Humboldt County Member Receives Scholarship

Yasmine White, a youth volunteer with the Humboldt County Teen Court program in California recently received a $250 scholarship. Yasmine is a graduate of Arcata High School and will be attending Brown University.

New York

Governor Pataki Honors Livingston County Youth Court
New York State Governor George E. Pataki recently recognized the Hillside Children’s Center Livingston County Youth Court. The governor signed a certificate commending the court on their service to the community as well as to the juvenile justice system.

Frost Receives Prestigious President’s Volunteer Service Award
A special congratulations goes out to Alexander Frost a youth volunteer with the Warren County Youth Court received the prestigious President’s Volunteer Service Award, a national honor in recognition of his volunteer service. Award recipients are selected by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, a group created by President Bush to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making.

Lawrence County Hosts Banquet
The Lawrence County Teen Court program held their annual awards banquet on April 27. Two senior youth volunteers received scholarships to attend the school of their choice. Sean Binder received a $750 scholarship and Sarah Joyce a scholarship of $500.

Texas

Navasota Youth Shine in Courtroom Trial Competitions
Congratulations to the Navasota’s Teen Court who recently had the opportunity to attend a workshop at the University of Houston. Those in attendance got to experience college first hand. Lectures by college professors, group interaction, as well as instruction in courtroom protocol and participation in mock trials were also highlighted. Overall, the youth court placed third in the mock trial competition.
