Topic: The Effects of Youth Court on Volunteers

Question: Are any teen courts conducting surveys/studies on the positive effects of teen court on youth volunteers?

Responses from Coordinators:

I have some information she might be interested in. We have completed an extensive survey and received responses from our prior Colonie Youth Court Members from 5 training classes (1994-1998). These responses from a 4 page survey reveal the effects of their Youth Court experience. Please let me know if you would like me to forward it to anyone.

We are located in Bismarck, ND and our program has evaluated the Teen Court Youth Volunteers the past two years. We combined resources with a local University to create survey questionaires for parents and youth. We did get a very high return rate on all questionaires.  The local University and our Teen Court staff sent out the questionaires by mail with a postage paid envelope included. In general, we found that youth volunteers reported an increase in self-confidence and an awareness of being a better example to those around them (since involvement in Teen Court). For a condensed version of our statistics you can go to www.teencourt.com and click on the "University of Mary Evaluation Results" phrase on the start page/ first page.

I do volunteer surveys at the end of each fiscal year. I am in the process of input on the data sheet. I won't be done until middle of June with the results.

We send out YC participant surveys after volunteers have been with the program for 3 months. The questions measure anything from how Youth Court has affected communication with peers to self-confidence and problem-solving capabilities. The survey also discusses the training sessions. Responses have been very positive and helpful.

Mat-Su Youth Court keeps an alumni survey on hand that all seniors fill out upon leaving our program. Most of our seniors go on to college, and some let us know how they are doing, but we have not been formally tracking them. Here are the seven questions we ask them:

  1. What advice do you have for new students?
  2. How do you feel you benefited from Youth Court?
  3. Would you be interested in mentoring new students, if you had available time?
  4. Are you planning on going to college? If so, where, and what is your planned area of study?
  5. Did you receive any scholarships toward college? If so, please list whom you received them from, and do you think being in Youth Court helpedyou receive any of your awards?
  6. What Youth Court class did you graduate from?
  7. Do you have any suggestions on ways of improving the Youth Court program?

We do volunteer evaluations quarterly, taking them to hearings for all volunteers present that night to fill out. The evaluations ask their gender, grade, age; how many years in TC; roles in TC; do TC volunteers take their roles seriously; how often do TC jurors determine fair and appropriate sentences; do trainings adequately prepare you for your job as a TC volunteer; since being involved in TC, are you more aware of the negative consequences of inappropriate behavior; would you encourage others to become a TC volunteer; would you recommend TC to a friend in trouble; has TC made a difference in your life; has your experience as a TC volunteer affected your attitudes and/or behavior in the following areas? check all that apply: school, home life, illegal drug use; what suggestions do you have to stop offenses by young people in our community. We also do annual evaluations of defendants and parents of defendants by mail, enclosing SASE. We also have evaluations for judges and probation officers.
