Insurance
for Youth Court Programs
Question: Does your youth court program have liability
insurance?

I have participated in 2 youth courts in 2 different states, but
always under the authority of a municipality or non-profit
agency. Is there some entity that could sponsor the questioner's
Youth Court, such as the local Prosecuting Attorney, Mayor's
Office, Juvenile Court or non-profit agency? Perhaps even the
school district would lend itself.
Where is the funding for the questioner's court coming from? If
funneled thru a local agency or entity, go there for insurance
coverage.

Since most Peer juries operate under the auspices of a local
police department or unit of local government, their insurance
would likely cover it. Ask them!

Greetings from the central part of Kansas. We are covered by the
Barton County Liability policy, so we have never had a separate
policy. We are a agency of this County, thus all our insurance,
sick leave, liability like you asked about, are covered from
Barton County.
I never even thought that we might need a liability policy. I
wish this coordinator well in this venture. We have been in
operation for over 5 years and this has not been a problem,
because we are covered by the Barton County policy.

The Owego Youth Court is insured through our village's "blanket"
insurance policy that covers employees, events and activities
(volunteers and offenders fall under the later two categories)

Our non-profit is using Neis Insurance out of Vancouver, WA. If
you want more information I will be happy to get it for you. We
have had this insurance for 4 years and it has steadily gone up.
We are paying $4300 this year for Board of Directors and
liability insurance. We cover the Peer Court, an adult/youth
mentor and youth/youth mentor program and events. We also have
never had a claim!

We get "Volunteer Liability Insurance" through the CIMA
Insurance Company. This covers team members, adult volunteers,
etc. We also have a "Court mandated community service" rider to
cover the respondents. It's pretty basic coverage and costs
approx. $700/yr. Most importantly, everyone signs a waiver of
liability!

Teen Court is a Volunteer program. You shouldn't need any
insurance. I hope you are having the teens and parents fill out
a waver...
